"I'm calling Providence for a lift back to base," Cesar says as-a-matter-of-fact-ly, standing up from the bench. The cold iron hasn't been very kind to him, but he hides the stiffness by moving slowly.
"You should probably move along before they arrive," Cesar adds, touching his earpiece. "Cesar to Providence."
There is a pause. Cesar turns away a little, touching the earpiece again, and leaving his hand up this time. "Providence?"
Besides, I'm not sure they'll even be here. This might not even be our world. The last place I was [Rex jerks a finger behind him, as though Sirocco is right behind me] wasn't.
Cesar's brow furrows slightly, and he looks back at Rex.
Before he can answer that first question, Cesar finds a much bigger point to address. "Rex," he says deliberately patient. "There's no current possible reason why this wouldn't be our world. And what do you mean 'the last place wasn't?'"
The last place I was in--Sirocco? Definitely not our own world. There are people there from all sorts of places, and there aren't any EVOs or nanites or anything.
Cesar sweeps him once or twice with his eyes, looking for telltale traces of a concussion. Trying to get a good look at his pupil size, he steps closer, his concern translating into a look of mild concentration.
"Have you been feeling alright, Rex?" These could be very bad signs. Memory loss? Hallucinations? What if Rex is losing his memory again to his strange amnesia?
[Cesar is giving him a strange look and he does not know how to handle this. He doesn't remember his brother ever looking this way at him. It's a little concerning!]
"You sound delusional, and I'm afraid it's a bit concerning," Cesar answers bluntly. Apparently having no regrets with calling his little brother crazy, he lifts a finger close to Rex's face, moving it from one side to the other to watch how Rex tracks it with his eyes.
Cesar gives up with the eye-tracking. "You're talking about parallel universes, and 'large blue things that kill you', Rex. That sounds pretty delusional to me."
"Have you been getting enough sleep recently? Any illnesses? Strange chemicals?" Cesar straightens and puts a hand to his chin, looking for all the world completely unmoved and unconcerned. If it weren't for the fact that this is his brother, Cesar might as well seem as though he were talking to a total stranger about directions to the nearest subway, rather than about potentially serious mental health conditions with his only family alive.
There is a pause, and the gears in his head visibly turn and work to mull this problem over. With as big a brain as his, surely his next words will be something useful, something clearly geared towards resolving this puzzle.
"... This is very strange."
Or not. Cesar thinks for a little longer, before appearing to shake himself, snapping back to the here and now.
"We'd better get you somewhere indoors, mijo. It's not safe for you out where just any Providence agent can find you."

What do you mean? Of course I have! Why?

[But that's because he's looking intently at Cesar, unamused, not because he's got a concussion or anything of the sort.]
What do you mean, I sound delusional? I'm just fine!

"The rest of us can actually see those."

Wait--you think I've gone loco? You think I'm just hallucinating all this stuff?

Well, except for that teeny tiny 'barely remembering a thing' part, that is.

Thick eyebrows draw closer together, and a faint line appears between them. To himself he mutters, "That explains some of the unusual behavior."
More loudly, "What's the last thing you remember fully?"
no subject
Meeting you. But it's not like I really remember much before then, either.

This new information gets a slight frown. "So you're saying that the deterioration in your memories ends just before you and I met at Providence?
no subject
I'm saying that I barely remember anything, aside from what Providence and EVOs are, meeting some of my friends, and meeting you.

"I'm afraid there's a lot you need filling in on, little brother. With your memory as it is now, you're a bit behind the times."
